More than 300 swimming pools are to benefit from £60 million funding to support their long-term future, including three in Cheshire East. These are Macclesfield Leisure Centre, Bollington Health and Leisure Centre and the Crewe Lifestyle Centre.
325 swimming pools and leisure centres across England will receive a share of £60.5 million to ensure their long term financial sustainability, by improving their energy efficiency in order to keep running costs down.
With the increase in energy costs over recent years, the Government has recognised the importance of these facilities to people of all ages, and stepped in to make sure the doors of local pools and leisure centres are kept open for local communities.
The latest round of funding is intended to help the longer term energy and financial resilience of the sector, with 96% of applicants for the latest round being successful in the application for Government and Sport England funding.
In total, Cheshire East Council has now received £1,125,933 from this fund allocated as follows:
PHASE 1 (Total £500,000)
1. CONGLETON: (Alsager) £ 68, 984
2. CREWE & NANTWICH (Nantwich) £190,922
3. MACCLESFIELD (Macclesfield) £ 66,190
(Poynton) £ 46,170
4. TATTON (Wilmslow) £127,734
PHASE 2 (Total 625,933)
1. Crewe Lifestyle Centre £365,235
2. Macclesfield Leisure Centre £209,961
3. Bollington Leisure Centre £. 50,737
Bearing in mind that Cheshire East Council has the ability to re-allocate this funding, we have asked officers that following their decision to ‘re-allocate’ the Poynton funding in phase 1 to projects elsewhere in the borough, that in the light of this exciting ‘windfall’, those monies will now be ‘re-allocated’ back to Poynton Leisure Centre, to improve their swimming offer and longer term viability as the funding originally intended!
