A major incident was declared following a fire that started yesterday afternoon at Beechmere ExtraCare Home on Rolls Avenue in Crewe.
As a result of the fire, some neighbouring properties were also evacuated and roads closed.
Throughout the night 16 fire engines from Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Merseyside were in attendance. Firefighters remain at the scene and, are likely to remain there into the weekend.
We would like to thank Cheshire East Staff who have worked so hard through the night, with partners from the Police together with voluntary, charitable and faith sectors, to support the residents into alternative accommodation.
The role of Cheshire East Social Care and wider services has been to provide ongoing support, particularly with undertaking welfare checks, arranging temporary accommodation and road closures.
Cllr Janet Clowes stated “I’m desperately sorry to have heard this news last night. It was my privilege to open Beechmere as one of our Connected Communities Centres last year and this will come as a great blow to those older residents who have effectively lost their homes. Cheshire East Communities and Social Care staff have been working overnight with fire and rescue teams, the police and voluntary agencies to relocate residents in the short term. The fire teams continue to monitor the site as it has proved hard to put out. These residents have effectively lost everything, but the community is already mobilising to help support them.”
Dr Kieran Mullan (Conservative PPC for Crewe & Nantwich) has launched a Donation Collection Point from the Conservative Office in Nantwich fro which donations will be taken to the Crewe Lifestyle Centre for sorting and distribution.
”Truly tragic to see this. I have had the pleasure of visiting and meeting with the residents here who were incredibly warm and welcoming.
UPDATE JustGiving page setup, please donate https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/beechmerefire
The Crewe Lifestyle Centre are taking donations . The residents have lost their possessions although I’m glad to say all were evacuated safely. I have spoken to the evacuation centre and understand everyone has somewhere to stay for the night. They’ve lost everything and have only got the clothes on their back so please please donate what you can!”
