Cheshire East Cllr Janet Clowes, together with Steve McQuade and Lindsay Lewis from Crewe Town Council joined CAT Radio this lunchtime to chat about all things to do with rubbish!
Following on from the success of the “No Rubbish Excuses” Fly-tipping and Littering Campaign in 2017, Cheshire East have worked in partnership with Crewe Town Council to develop a new approach for engaging with residents in areas where the campaign was less effective and where waste management remains an issue.
All monies remaining from Fixed Penalty Notices issued by Litter Wardens to those who were caught dropping litter during 2017/18 has been invested by Cheshire East, working closely with Crewe Town Council to employ two street scene improvement officers. Their role will be to focus on areas where there is regular fly-tipping and side tipping of waste. They have been active now for two weeks and are already making contact with residents and landlords having first examined the waste materials, retrieved evidence of its source and then of course arranging for its collection and disposal.
These officers, together with Crewe Rangers and CEC’s Waste Company ANSA and Housing Team, will work directly with home owners, businesses, tenants and landlords in affected areas. It is recognised that the reasons for dumping waste can be complex and so recognising and mitigating the reasons for this behaviour are an important first step, but the collection of material evidence, trend data and habitual non-compliance will, for those who continue to offend, result in prosecution, court action and substantial fines.
Steve Morris (from CAT Community Radio) quizzed the three guests on a wide range of issues including rural fly-tipping, littering and dog fouling as well as urban flytipping over the course of today’s “Late Lunch” programme
