Congleton MP Fiona Bruce visited the Holmes Chapel base of “Bespak” this week, to meet with Louise Righton and Jeremy Tidmarsh along with Chief Executive Officer, Chris Hirst. The site is one of three for this organisation that is leading the way in manufacturing climate-friendly inhaled and nasally administered medicines.
This is pivotal work, as the NHS seeks to reduce its carbon footprint and to achieve net zero by 2040. Medicines account for 25% of the NHS’s emissions of which 3% comes from the use of inhalers. They are used to treat a wide variety of respiratory conditions ranging from asthma to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and deliver a metred dose at the point of delivery through ‘propellents’ that are also ‘greenhouse gases’.
Bespak has recently announced that they are increasing manufacturing capacity at the Holmes Chapel site, for the increased production of inhalers that use a low-global warming alternative propellant to administer important medicines for patients.
Fiona said:
"I was delighted to hear of the innovative work of Bespak at Holmes Chapel, and I'm proud that such a critical health product is being developed here for a worldwide market.
"As a key local employer for the Congleton constituency, it is hugely encouraging to hear of the globally leading role Bespak is playing in the key transition to supplying life-saving greener inhalers".
In 2022, the Government’s Health & Social Care Act underscored the need for the NHS to respond to climate change and gave NHS England Statutory Powers to support the NHS system on its route to net zero.
